A single-vehicle accident yesterday on GA 341 between Camp Rd. and Pond Spring claimed the life of a 25-year-old Kensington man. The sole individual involved was ejected from the vehicle and killed; he was reportedly late for work and speeding when the vehicle went out of control. Residents in the area say there are accidents there often, they blame a lack of guardrails and no law enforcement presence watching for speeders.

Thoughts and prayers go out to his family today.

Another serious accident occurred around the same time on Hwy. 27 near the Chickamauga Huddle House. No word on the condition of persons involved in that incident.

LPD has arrested two men, Ricky Sweet and Julian Uvalle, for breaking into six cars, stealing offering money from the Church of Christ last week, and swiping cameras from Second Baptist after the free dental clinic. Couple of real nice fellows.

One of the cars burglarized belonged to a firefighter, and they stole his radio and “turn out gear” which would be essentially worthless unless you work for a fire department.

Another burglary where a home on Warthen St. was set on fire after jewelry was stolen is now also being linked to the two arrested men, Sweet and possibly Uvalle.

New airport terminal construction. Somehow expected it to.. look bigger than this.

WQCH Radio, 09/24/12: “NEW CLAIMS FOR UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS DROPPED SHARPLY FROM JULY TO AUGUST, ACCORDING TO THE GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF LABOR. JOB LAYOFFS ARE SLOWING ALL ACROSS THE NORTHWEST GEORGIA AREA. HERE IN WALKER COUNTY, NEW CLAIMS DROPPED FROM 378 IN JULY, TO 191 IN AUGUST. THAT’S 187 FEWER NEW CLAIMS.”

This isn’t a sign of more jobs, but a sign of slowing unemployment. After a certain point there’s nobody left to become unemployed.

Friday the Sheriff’s Office picked up this convicted child molester for failing to register locally. His current mugshot looks nothing like this one from ’99 and he last registered in Gainesville. The address in the arrest makes no sense, but a neighbor says he was living in Carriage Estates trailer park near Walmart.

Here’s what he looked like last week:

This is posted not to kick him around (although he molested his stepdaughter so he can get kicked a bit), but as a warning to anyone who’s lived near him, and as a warning to anyone who’s got a neighbor they don’t know well. Keep an eye on your kids and where they play. You never know what kind of background somebody has.

Here’s a map of all the KNOWN registered sex offenders in the area.

Yesterday LMS Softball beat Chattanooga Valley 15-4. They’re now 14-5 for the season, which wraps up Friday. Tournament play begins next week.

?WQCH Radio, 09/24/12: ?”THE NUMBER OF REGISTERED VOTERS IN NORTHWEST GEORGIA HAS DROPPED SHARPLY SINCE THE LAST PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN 2008. IN FACT, WALKER, DADE, CATOOSA AND CHATTOOGA COUNTIES HAVE A COMBINED 6,300 FEWER PEOPLE ON THE VOTER ROLES THIS YEAR, ACCORDING TO THE SECRETARY OF STATE’S OFFICE.
“IF YOU’VE CHANGED YOUR ADDRESS OR OTHER VOTER I.D. INFORMATION, BE SURE TO GET IT UPDATED BY THE CUT-OFF DATE. THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER IS OCTOBER 9th. ADVANCE VOTING IN GEORGIA, WILL BEGIN ON OCTOBER 15th, AND ELECTION DAY IS TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6th.”

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If the only voters registered are the ones who actually vote, there’s less room for abuse (using someone else’s name to vote, etc) and they don’t say “only 16% of registered voters blah blah” every election.

And as discussed here yesterday, Georgia residents can now fill out voter registration forms online.

Government mandated closure of coal power plants around the country is good for the timber industry, as some steam-powered facilities have shifted to pine chips for fuel. That’s great for GA as we have a crap-ton (technical term) of pine trees. For now.
